Change in Government May Impact Workplace Health and Safety

Health and Safety Consultant Rob Castledine has said that the proposed cuts in public expenditure suggested by the Conservative Party could compromise on the implementation of proper health and safety provisions at workplaces.

He was speaking at an interview with Workplace Law where he discussed the effects that the election and subsequent change in government could have on health and safety at the workplace. Castledine will be the chairman of the Facilities Management Legal Update Conference being held on June 16 at the Workplace Law Executive Centre.

Castledine spoke of the Conservatives’ decision to eliminate red tape by suggesting that low risk businesses could do away with regular health and safety inspections and have independent audits instead. The consultant cautioned that this would be effective only if the businesses in question used external advice and health and safety consultancy.

A self regulatory system would work properly only if there were clear outcomes and expectations. He added that these health and safety issues must be given due importance by whichever party that comes to power in the elections.

Safety precautions aside, the government must also pay due attention to the fact that many workers suffer ill health by working in unfavourable conditions. Castledine pointed out that over 130,000 employees sustain work place related injuries each year. About 1.2 million workers suffered health problems caused by working conditions last year.

Castledine stated that this high number is the reason why the HSE is focussing on health and well being. But he admitted that as the effects are less obvious and the implementation of safety provisions more challenging, ensuring that businesses have the right measures in place is difficult.
