Right now both Visto and Seven have been keen to show their commitment to this technology. These are following the lead set by Canadian firm RIM (Research In Motion) who brought the technology into the spotlight with their Blackberry device. While so far they have been concentrating on supplying hardware, they have stated that they will be moving into the supply of software instead in the near future.

The wave of consolidations has already begun. British vendor Comtag was acquired by Smartner who in turn was acquired by Seven; moving in parallel with this, Visto acquired Psion Software. It looks like the heat is turning up in the race to capture this market. Both Visto and Seven show no sign of flagging as they continue to increase the number of operators they can lay claim to, as well as increasing the number of handsets and other supported devices they are marketing. Seven has also added a useful security feature which allows you to send a special message to your device which will delete all the messages it currently has stored. This could be lifesaving if you left your handset in a public place.

Good Technology was somewhat shielded in its area by supporting Palm and Windows devices but now there is the new Windows Mobile based Treos to contend with.

So what is Microsoft’s reaction to all of this? Well, they appear to be gearing up to enter the market. In his blog, Microsoft senior technology specialist, Harold Wong has reported that the company is getting ready to release its ‘Community Technology Preview’ build of Exchange Server 2003, Service pack 2. And this is not the only step the giant is taking. In June 2005, Intellisync announced a new service that would allow subscribers to receive push email on Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian devices.

While, of the current estimated 4 million push email subscribers, most seem to be using RIM Blackberry devices, this assault will be difficult to bare much longer.

On the technical side, there are two basic technologies that can provide push email solutions:

* the other has a push effect using synchronization.

While the users will not notice a significant difference when they log in to check their mail, the costs vary to a considerable extent with true push technologies offering a far cheaper monthly cost to the user. While Intellisync is currently using a SyncML or synchronization technology to serve its customers, RIM and Microsoft are using their own proprietary systems. The system that has found favour both with Vodafone, the world’s largest network operator, and Rogers, the first operator to deploy Blackberry devices is the solution that Visto opted for also. This is best described as a Proprietary + RTP/RTSP system and Visto calls it ConstantSync. It effectively relies on a real time streaming protocol to deliver email over mobile networks.

Whatever the technicalities behind the networks, there is a lot to play for in this emerging market and we’ll have to wait and see whose technology and handheld devices carry the most favour with customers. All have relative advantages and disadvantages both in terms of technology and market strategy and it all really is still to play for.

More and more companies are turning to IVR to help reduce the cost of common sales, service, collections, inquiry and support calls to and from their company.

Interactive Voice Response or IVR is one of the most common telephone functions in use across the business community and is capable of bringing remarkable benefits to your company. IVR systems allow 24 hour access to a company from its customers via its phone system. In today’s busy modern world, most callers expect on first contact with a company, to be handled via some kind of Auto Attendant or Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. This method of call handling is generally accepted as long as the caller is given ample opportunity to opt out of the IVR system and be able to speak to a live agent.

IVR systems offer a cost effective and money saving way of handling customer calls twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The main drawback to CPE IVR systems is that you would need continuing technical support and maintenance either from your own internal staff or outsourced to the IVR system provider.

IVR Hosting - If a customer prefers not to host an IVR system on their premises, is restricted by location, lacks IT support or quite simply cannot withstand the initial financial outlay required for outright purchase then a remote IVR hosting solution that can be tailored to a company’s requirements could be the answer. This option is particularly attractive for small to medium sized businesses who wish to take advantage of a fully featured Interactive Voice Response system, with a vastly reduced initial capital outlay, as well as eradicating the need for system IT maintenance, and support.

The Key of Being Remembered at a Party

Today was the first birthday party of the school season. Everyone at the party was fairly new because all of our kids are in kindergarten so no one really had the advantage over anyone else. Everyone was great at introducing themselves and meeting each other.

At one point the host of the party walked by and asked me: “is there anyone you don’t know?” I laughed because I’ve lived here for 1 month, and everyone is new to me! But a few of the gals noticed that I was introducing everyone to each other and they seemed to be impressed. They said they were going to have to take a class to learn how to remember names and I told them that I taught one! At first they thought I was joking, but then I told them that I really DID teach communication skills, and it’s actually EASY.. if you just know how.

I realized a LONG time ago that remembering peoples’ names is definitely a skill worth learning! It’s something that other people admire and it will be at least ONE “thing” that will help people remember YOU.

I told the ladies that the easiest way to remember someone’s name is to repeat it a few times within the context of the conversation. One lady said that she’d FORGET the name even before she would even get to SAY the name again! I told her that it’s perfectly fine to touch the person on the arm, look in their eyes, and ask what their name was again! This way they’ll know you’re sincere and TRYING to remember their name.

The conversation can be sprinkled with questions and using the name during the question process is easy! “Sue, it’s nice to meet you! Now, who is your child? Ahh.. yes.. And Sue, is your husband here?”

Another GREAT way to remember everyone’s name is to introduce anyone new you met to someone else. That way you get to say his or her name once again and it’ll remain fresh in your mind.

No telling whether I’ll remember everyone’s name the next time I see them if I don’t practice seeing their names in my mind now, but from what I can see, this group is worth getting to know. The people I met today were interesting, charming and memorable.

And I’m happy that I know how to remember names, because now, I can focus on getting to know THEM, and not just their names!

Can We Talk? Interpersonal Communications 101

Communications is a two way process of sending and receiving messages. The sharing of messages between human beings is complicated and far too often taken for granted. Generally what we do is talk. Let’s clear one thing up from the outset. Talking is not communicating. We can talk without communicating and to be honest with you, this seems to be the case in way too many relationships.

Understanding and improving communication patterns means learning not to take communication for granted. Admittedly, this is difficult because most people tend to be as unaware of their communication as their breathing. It is crucial that you begin to see that it is communication that creates relationships and it is most often communications breakdowns, either directly or indirectly, that lead ultimately to relationships demise.

Human relationships and communication are interpersonal, that is, between humans and the interpersonal communication of messages is a two-way process. Inherent in the two-way view of communication is the understanding that persons who communicate both send and receive messages and both are responsible for the message.

When communicating is understood as a dynamic process, it becomes clear that speakers need to express thinking and feeling messages as clearly and accurately as possible; listeners need to provide responses in order to clarify their perception of messages. Sometimes in relationships, persons will not share the same perceptions and there will be conflict. Conflict is inevitable because people are unique and different. It is important to avoid viewing conflict as something which is always bad because it is not; conflict can be healthy. It would probably be beneficial to manage conflict as opposed to eliminating it. Trying to get rid of it entirely may result in individuals erecting walls of separation. It is perfectly okay to just agree to disagree. Good conflict management skills can keep your relationship positive and may even strengthen it. Of course, the opposite is also true. Poor conflict management can destroy relationships.

I cannot begin to impress upon you how extremely important it is to develop good assertive communication skills. When you are assertive, you are emotionally honest because you express your thoughts and feelings in such a way that the other person feels valued and respected and also respects you. We must preserve the other’s ego strength. Failure to do so will ultimately lead to the diminishing of the relationship integrity. There is much truth in the axiom, “it is not what you say but how you say it.”

It always made me cringe when I counseled couples where one or both engaged in nonassertive communications. Nonassertive communications is dishonest and disparaging of one’s self because you deny your own thoughts and feelings. Nonassertive communication is an anathema to relationships because it is a situation where one feels hurt and inferior and angry while the other person feels superior. In situations like this, the negative thoughts and feelings do not go away, they build, fester and brew and may eventually be expressed in some form of misconduct.

Perhaps most debilitating of all is aggressive communications. Aggressive communications exist where one person expresses him or herself without regard for the other person or the relationship. It is the height of disrespect and non-caring.

Again (and I cannot repeat it too often), assertive communications is the way to go. It serves to preserve or build relationships of mutual respect even when the communicators have very different perspectives on what they are communicating about.

Dish Network and Direct TV try to join forces

In October of 2001, Dish Network and Direct TV made a very
serious attempt at joining forces with one another which would
have given these two Satellite TV providers a huge monopoly in
the satellite TV industry, however, the US Department of Justice
took a bold face stance and blocked the merger. If the merger
between Dish Network and Direct TV would have taken place, the
new company would serve the entire US without fear of any
competition, resulting in a complete monopoly position that is
not allowed. As we all know, competition spurs competitive
pricing and continuous progress and a merger of this magnitude
would basically result in less progress and the possibility of
inflated prices. At the present time Dish network and Direct TV
are the only two satellite TV providers in America, a merger
between the two would reduce this to just one company, which
clearly is a dangerous monopoly situation for consumers at hand.
Even in areas with cable TV the merger would result in just 2
television broadcasting providers, of which each has a monopoly
on its own technology. In their application, Dish Network and
Direct TV claimed that their joining of forces was necessary to
compete against the cable TV Giants. However, at the time of
said application, statistics indicated that satellite TV was
growing at an incredibly fast pace while cable TV subscriptions
were on the decline. Over all it seemed that without any other
satellite TV providers a merger between Dish Network and Direct
TV would not be not in the public’s best interest. The fact that
there are two satellite TV providers and not just one is a
blessing to everyone interested in signing up for Satellite TV
Service, as mentioned earlier competition is good for pricing.
Dish Network and Direct TV are now going head to head with one
another in a very aggressive marketing campaign and as a result
the consumer gains to prosper very nicely by taking advantage of
the phenomenal deals that are being offered by either of these
two Satellite TV giants.

Telephone Headsets - Wireless Headsets: Are They Safe?

There’s an ongoing debate over the effects of radio transmission waves emitted by wireless products and their effect upon people. Anecdotal evidence suggests that there is a strong link to the frequent use of cell phones and some very unpleasant health issues.

These concerns flow over to other radio devices too, and we, those that sell these items, are continually asked about the safety aspects of wireless headsets.

Well, are they safe to use all day, everyday?

Of course, the salesman’s answer is likely to be - yes! But absolutely, I do believe they are and would have no hesitation in wearing one myself (which I do), all day, everyday.

Plantronics claims that its CS50 wireless headset has an output of only 1.7 milliwatts, which is about 1/1000th of the output of most cell phones, and in nearly all countries, there are the relevant certification and other statutory requirements that have to be met before any items like these can be sold and connected.

Bluetooth models have an even lower output than DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) or 900 Mhz headsets.

I’ve never heard of any incidents or situations, where a wireless headset was implicated in anything connected with the same issues we hear about cell phones, i.e. cancers, etc. So, from my point of view I feel quite safe in using them, even in areas where there maybe several operating at the same time.

Perhaps some may suggest that they haven’t been in use long enough, to adequately gauge the level of threat, if indeed there is one. Anyway, I’m not concerned: I will not give mine up!

On the other, non-technical side, there are the safety benefits that are reaped by not having wires. For a start you wont trip over or catch them on anything and I feel the ergonomics - where and how you sit at your desk while making phone calls may even be further improved by using a wireless.

This is because you don’t have the cable to think about at all - it’s not tugging or constraining you, so there’s no anxiety about whether you maybe stretching the cable too much. This consideration is important if you want to conserve your headset cables, as I’ve spoken about elsewhere regarding the care of cabled headsets.

There is also the advantage, however unlikely, during a lightning storm, or any other extreme electrical disturbance of not actually being connected to the telephone grid. You’re not liable to be used by Mother Nature as a conductor!

About the only thing that is not safer, is your bank balance, as dependant upon the country where you live, lashing out and buying a wireless headset is going to pinch your hip pocket nerve. But, if you’re serious about it and understand the benefits, you wont regret the purchase.
