Mayo Shattuck’s Emphasis on Business Continuity Pays off

June 29th, 2009

Mayo Shattuck’s arrival at Constellation Energy Group (CEG) in 2001 introduced fresh and innovative strategies. These included a business continuity program that has helped the company boost its preparedness in the event of emergencies. Learning from the impact of 9/11 and the Y2K on several business operations, Mayo Shattuck made continuity planning a priority the day he stepped foot on CEG and delivered remarkable results for the company.

Mayo Shattuck envisioned a unified and enterprise-wide continuity program that would be able to respond at a moment’s notice. If businesses are unable to recover immediately from terrorist attacks or natural disasters, they would suffer heavy losses. And for a company that deals with electricity, CEG recognizes its urgent need to pursue an effective business continuity program.

Mayo Shattuck built a continuity program involving over 800 business continuity coordinators, building wardens and risk coordinators to oversee preparedness and recovery initiatives. The program tested successfully against Hurricane Isabel in 2003, which struck CEG headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. The storm flooded the harbor areas and cut off access to CEG headquarters and knocked out power lines belonging to BGE utility. However, with CEG’s continuity program in place, operations were seamlessly moved to one of CEG’s hot sites while the headquarters was recovered and power restored.
