What to Do about Ocella Side Effects

November 26th, 2009

Studies executed on healthy, premenopausal women in the Netherlands observed that Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella (generic Yasmin) suffered an increased risk of venous thrombosis as compared to non-users. The risks were increased as high as five times with oral contraceptives. These reports were published in August 2009. This was simply the beginning of the controversy surrounding Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella and the consequent lawsuits to come involving Yaz side effects.

Mass Tort is simply civil action that extends to a number of complainants. This process is taken against one or more corporate defendants in court. Unlike a class action where a number of people take it upon themselves to bring forth litigation together, in mass tort the original plaintiffs and lawyers use mass media resources to reach other possible plaintiffs. Those television and newspaper solicitations wondering if you are a loved one have been effected by a particular product are the result of mass tort status.

Any women that have been injured as a result of taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella may be entitled to recompense. Many attorneys and legal aid agencies such as thelegaladvocate.com now offer assistance to anyone living with side effects and health issues as a direct result of using Yasmin contraception. Now that more adult females across the country are coming forward and filing suit, the legal system is moving closer to offering justice for those who were misinformed by the birth control manufacturers and possibly their doctors.

About Gouldian Finches

July 27th, 2009

The numbers of Gouldian Finches have diminished rather rapidly during the 20th century. Their habitat has been reduced or altered. Early research showed a parasite called air sac mite, was responsible for the decline of the Gouldian. However, this idea has been ruled out. In general, The Lady Gouldian Finch is susceptible to diseases and viral infections. Their exquisite colors mean that they are easily killed by predatory animals. Fires are listed as the #1 threat to the natural populations. The total amount of Gouldian finches all told is not low, however, because they are among the most popular pet birds, and are bred in captivity for the pet trade.

Actions have been taken and are underway to implement a recovery plan to recover and conserve its natural habitats, such as building protective fencing to prevent damage by cattle. Attempts at reintroduction have so far proved unsuccessful; it was also suggested to develop management guidelines for land-holders about appropriate land management, promoting the recovery program and Gouldian Finche preservation.

Although often bred in a colony in captivity, in the wild The Gouldian is not a settlement bird. However, out of the mating time of year it assembles in flocks often a mixed flock consisting of Longtail Finches, Masked Finches and Gouldians. This is probably a defence against predation. Flocks used to consist of up to 1000″2000 individuals. During the breeding season they are usually found on rough scree slopes where vegetation is sparse. In the dry season they are more nomadic and will move to wherever there is food and water.

Working in the Rain

July 2nd, 2009

It’s the last days in June which can mean only one thing. Wimbledon is present! It’s the 14 days in the calendar year when people begin to find their tennis rackets, find their tennis kits and game the inescapable rain to practice their serve and volley. Man and Van Wimbledon is dedicated to supplying the most effective and competitive service available even when SW19 is filled to the brim with tourists. Man and Vans, London’s premier light removal service, is situated in South West London and really is happy to help its neighbours with any light removals they may have. Man and Van Wimbledon may be too busy to hit the courts this summer but here at Man with Van headquarters we’re highly mad about Wimbledon’s new Centre Court Roof. Although Man and Van Wimbledon will work in the showers, Rafael, Roger and Andy have never been too enthusiastic about braving heavy rain. Thankfully this summer there’ll be no need for Cliff Richards’ services as, from the 17th May, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Association has been using its new retractable roof. Health and Safety tests on the court were taken by none other than Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters, who took part in an exhibition game of mixed doubles as the well timed rain dabbed the roof as it retracted.

Progress in Immunohistochemistry Plays a Major Part in Diagnosis as Cases of Mesothelioma Are on the Rise

May 15th, 2009

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare and fast moving tumor where no successful therapy is around in spite of the breakthrough of quite a few probable molecular targets. The final stages of Malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosis and the long latency that exists connects some exposures and diagnosis have made it difficult to comprehensively study what risk factors do and their downstream molecular effects.

A lot of health centres are witnessing more patients that are suffering from malignant mesothelioma. This gives pathologists diagnosing the patient many problems, which can be divided into those encountered in finding the differences between mesothelioma and harmless changes and those discovered in separating cancer of the mesothelium from additional forms of epithelial and connective tissue tumours. IHC is a major factor in diagnosis, however, it should be interpreted with regards to the medical setting and radiological features, and understanding the vast morphological variations that exist in malignant mesothelioma.

Cancer of the mesothelium is a primary cancer of the serosal cavities, an anatomic location that is often affected by mets, largely from primary carcinomas of the ovary, lung and breast. Progression in immunohistochemistry have resulted in improvement in diagnostic sensitivity and cancer of the mesothelium in regards to histological and cytological material. Lately, the authors faction employed a high level of throughput technology to the identification of new flags that might assist in differentiating malignant mesothelioma from cancer in the peritoneum and ovaries, tumors cells that contain closely related histogenesis and antigenic profile. Along with the improved medical devices available for serosal cancer diagnosis, realizing the biology of mesothelioma has increased as of late.

Broad Foundation’s Prize for Urban Education: Setting An Example

July 17th, 2008

Eli and Edythe Broad established The Broad Foundation in 1999 to help improve K-12 urban public education. The foundation’s Prize for Urban Education has given scholarships to more than 730 students since 2002. For school year 2007, a $500,000 scholarship was awarded to the New York City Department of Education while four finalist districts were given $125,000 each. All finalists went through a rigid selection process undertaken by education researchers, policy leaders, practitioners, and executives from leading universities. The scholarship program is awarded to schools whose students show substantial improvement in their performance throughout high school and are in need of financial assistance. All student recipients are graduating high school seniors who exhibit a desire to pursue a college education. Aside from helping schools and students deal with the financial needs of a good education, Eli and Edythe Broad’s scholarship program has set an example of how a student can succeed if he strives hard. It has helped bring back faith in the public school system. Every year, schools work harder by encouraging their students to do their best. This unique scholarship concept recognizes excellence and the combined efforts of students, parents, teachers, the school administration, and the district or community to which the school belongs. More than anything else, Eli and Edythe Broad have given every child the right to quality public education which can later on contribute to the foundation of the country’s democracy and economic success.

Where’s the Outrage - Remember August 2005

May 22nd, 2008

In August the news is supposed to slow. This month, however, has been as busy as any other month for important news. Bill Frist, Senate majority leader, ended this session of Congress by announcing his support for stem cell research. Wasn’t that debate big six months ago? Didn’t Ron Reagan, Jr. stand up at the Democratic National Convention and speak in support of stem cell research last summer? Where was Dr. Come Lately then? Dr. Frist is trying to position himself as a moderate who loves the people so that he can run for president in 2008. Did you see him at NASCAR Cola-Coca 600? He looked about as comfortable as Ralph Nader in a Hummer.

Israel is pulling out of the Gaza strip. Hamas, a militant organization that is labeled as a terrorist organization by our State department, claims that their campaign of terror has worked, and they will continue the violence. Israel’s Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, seems to understand that Israel has to give up something if they are going to move the peace process along. Sharon is showing the kind of strength that we would like to see in our politicians.

As attacks on our troops continue in Iraq, the anti-war movement has finally found a face to put to its words. Cindy Sheehan is that face. The beauty of Ms. Sheehan’s message is its simplicity. She simply wants to know why her son had to die. What was the noble purpose? So far, the Bush administration really has not had any good answers. They cannot use the WMD argument since more and more evidence is coming out that the intelligence community had significant doubts before the invasion that Iraq did not have significant weapons. Although Bush has tried to push the idea that Al Qaeda and Saddam were bedfellows, the 9-11 Commission has quashed that idea … totally. So, let’s ask the question again - Why did her son have to die?

So where does that leave Bush? Out in the cold if you ask me. He really does not have any good answers to the families that have lost loved ones. He could try the truth — he wanted to publicly humiliate Saddam for trying to kill his father, for lying to weapons inspectors, and for making the senior President Bush and his post-Gulf War peace agreement look weak. When Europe wanted to stop sanctions against Iraq and to sell that country food and supplies, Saddam was laughing at us. The junior President Bush could not have that. In essence, President Bush took America to War to resolve a personal grudge.

The good news for Democrats is that they have an ace in the hole. Bush. Bush is Bush. He is not going to change. He is going to vacation in spite of the fact that his approval ratings are falling faster than Michael Jackson’s popularity. He will not meet with Ms. Sheehan because… He is riding his bike? At a fundraiser? Clearing brush? All the Democrats have to do is let Bush continue to shoot himself in the foot. In the meantime, it would be great if Democrats would get a message. Any message. Drop the “we’re not Bush message.” It did not work for Kerry.

As all of these problems stew in Iraq, the administration has offered no changes in plans. One has to wonder if there is a plan for how to fix the problem of security in Iraq. Bush has made a political decision not to increase the number of troops in Iraq. We really cannot pull out of Iraq while insurgents are flowing into Iraq, in part because we did not close the borders. If we pull out of Iraq, Iran will move in. Syria will move in. Iraq most likely will break into three or more pieces. Terrorist training camps will sprout up like weeds in my garden; and, I hate to say it, America will be less safe.

#####

Hurricane Katrina has devastated the Gulf Coast. From New Orleans east to the Florida panhandle, there is water or destruction where there used to be buildings and commerce. This is a huge national problem. We cannot afford to stand by for three to five years while the city of New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities such as Biloxi and Gulf Port struggle back to their feet. The amount of work that needs to be done is overwhelming. Remove the water. Rebuild levees. Repair and restart pumps. Clean up. Rebuild neighborhoods, businesses and infrastructure. In the meantime, where do over two million people live? How can they find work?

We, in the trauma/critical care community, have been talking about disasters for a long time. Here are a few of the suggestions to repair and rebuild this area as quickly as possible -

1. Mobilize the National Guard from other states. You are going to need a lot of manpowertens of thousands.

2. FEMA should make physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, EMTs, paramedics, etc. government employees for 60 - 90 days. Thousands of extra medical personnel will be needed to prevent and control the diseases that await us (West Nile, Cholera, dysentery - to name a few).

3. Armed Forces medical ships should be stationed off the coast of Mississippi and Louisiana. Patients and personnel will need to be flown or ferried to the ships for medical treatment.

4. The President should call on industry, just as FDR did in 1941, to pull together to help rebuild this area. We are going to need food, clothing, shelter and toilets. Houses will need to be repaired. Roofs fixed and windows replaced. Pipes. Generators. Cell and Telephone towers. The list is almost endless. One other thing: those who try to gouge the federal, state, or local governments should be charged as criminals and serve time.

In addition to measures such as these, the victims of Katrina will need our prayers and our gifts.
