Lexmark printers use a system that will stop their functioning when replenished by other business firms. By making chips that bypast Lexmark s preventative technology it was suggested that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act had been violated. The court struggle lasted seven years with the result that the Lexmark toner loading program was pronounced not to be copyright-able, opening the gates for compatibles manufacturers. After seven long years of legal wrangling and appeals, Lexmark lost the case.

There are a wide range of compatible ink manufacturers. Ink quality can vary between different compatible brands, and indeed between assorted cartridges within those makes. Taking a chance on compatible inks often pays off. If you are not sure about a manufacturer, remember that you can often try five or six assorted ones and still pay less than for one original ink. Compatible ink can save you sizeable amounts of cash, and you can still get good quality documents and photos. The price of ink cartridges varies greatly from store to store.

Looking around for deals can save you a great deal. As well as looking at the major retailers there are also internet sites that do ink price comparison. You can often make big savings by using these sites.
