Both Internet businesses and brick and mortar businesses operate and are monitored differently. Internet businesses operate in a virtual marketplace and can be monitored anywhere as long as there’s a computer with an internet connection while brick and mortar type of business can only operate at a fixed physical location. What’s interesting about internet businesses is that the owners can operate and monitor his/her business at the comfort of home or while going on vacation and that, owners of brick and mortar business can’t do.

Life would certainly be a bliss as an internet entrepreneur because they are the ones who can stay at home or travel and make money at the same time unlike brick and mortar entrepreneur who is forever stuck at the same location and struggling to keep operation cost at minimal in order for the business to stay alive.

Travelling in the Amazon, the world’s most famous river, is a typical dream. But… the Amazon world may be rather different to that which you expect. You may end up disappointed. You should plan your Amazon trip correctly, and shape it to your style and to the time you have to enjoy the Amazon.

There are different ways of visiting the Amazon rainforest. If you are pressed for time, or if you think you would not like to live for four, five, six or more days in a beautiful and calm, but repetitive world of water and trees, then avoid a long river trip.

In that case, a quick flight to Manaus (a city in the very heart of the Amazon, 1,000 miles upstream from the river mouth) is preferable. Once there, you can model the tour to your tastes. You can enjoy several short local cruises, you can explore some rainforest treks, you can swim and fish, you can visit local people living in the forest (the caboclos), you can get a good grasp of what the rainforest and the river are… And you can even play golf.

This option demands a stay of, say, 3 or 4 days minimum. It all depends on what you want.

Another alternative when visiting the Amazon involves a longer tour on the river - typically a trip from Belem (at the mouth of the Amazon) to Manaus, or the inverse.

This cruise can be made on a transatlantic cruiser, and includes a great range of cities and ports outside the Amazon. Tours of two weeks are very common. You just need to cost it, and to book the cruise early enough (there isn’t a regular transatlantic cruiser route to the Amazon, and so you should plan the cruise well in advance).

More adventurous travellers may prefer other kind of boats and travel for a long river cruise. There are, in Belem and Manaus, local tourist riverboats and regular river vessels (for local passengers and goods) making the trip between the two towns.

And these two kinds of riverboats - the tourist and the regular ones - constitute the best way of experiencing the full mood and the immensity of the Amazon (and, in the case of travelling in a regular vessel, the best way to have contact with the real people, and feel their friendly mood, their way of facing the life).

But you should also ponder the possible downsides of these options. One of them is the uncertain duration of the trip: it can be four days, if the weather conditions and the currents and other factors are favourable, but it can also be extended for one, two or more days, which may clash with your travel plans, flights, etc.

Another possible inconvenience involves the regular vessels (not tourist river boats): the toilet facilities in the boats are rather improvised, which can be disagreeable; also, you can be forced to sleep in a hammock, surrounded by local people. So, think well…

In any case, do not also expect to see profuse fauna on your cruise. Birds and monkeys tend to hide themselves in the treetops… You will sense them, but most of the time you will not see them.

What you will see all the time - and feel deeply in your heart - is a different world… a calm green water world. A world with moments of exceptional beauty, but also a repetitive one, with its endless elements succeeding minute after minute, for days on end…

A world in the antipodes of ours, involving another pace, other elements: one that makes us feel small, and awakes thoughts about our place in the universe, and the meaning of our life and our values.

The Government, in my opinion, has created a “Killer Whale” when they created ORCA. ORCA stands for “Online Representations and Certifications Application”.

Before you can use ORCA, you must be registered at CCR. You can find the CCR site at http://www.ccr.gov. A link to the ORCA registration page can be found on the left side of the CCR page.

In order to log into ORCA, you will need your company’s DUNS number and your MPIN, which is issued after you register with CCR. MPIN stands for “Marketing Partner Identification Number” and is required to access several government sites, including www.grants.gov.

Once you register your information with ORCA, the information stays active for 365 days. Then, you’ll have to renew (actually, refresh) the information so that it can continue to be used. If you update your information during the year, the expiration date is automatically extended for another 365 days.

While it has taken some time, it seems that the Government is finally using technology to improve the way they do business. Since I mentioned “Grants.gov” earlier, you might want to check out their site also.

Companies looking for Federal Grants can finally find everything in one place. Grants.gov allows organizations to find and apply for more than $400 Billion in Federal Grants. It is THE single access point for over 1000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant-making agencies. Again, you can find their site at www.grants.gov.

Don’t forget to register with ORCA. You will find that it will save you significant paperwork.

The U.S. Supreme Court rendered a decision on December 7, 2005, impacting people who are behind in paying their loans.

In Lockhart v. United States, the Supreme Court was asked to rule on whether the federal government could seize social security benefits to cover outstanding student loans. The case involved James Lockhart, a disable man, who sued to stop the government from cutting his monthly $874 check. Lockhart suffers from heart disease, diabetes and other health problems and lives in public housing in Seattle. He argued the forfeiture of part of his check made it impossible for him to continue to buy his medication and food. The Justices disagreed with Lockhart.

Under federal law, efforts to collect defaulted student loans had a 10 year limit. Put another way, the federal government was barred from hunting down delinquent payers after ten years. In the past few years, however, Congress did away with this limitation, which brought forth a conflict of law. The Social Security Act contains language protecting benefits from being seized as part of debt actions. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled that such protections only apply to private individuals, not the federal government. In short, social security benefits are no longer safe.

Currently, the total balance on outstanding student loans is roughly $30 billion. Of this amount, roughly seven billion are delinquent or defaulted loans. With 25 percent of loans in the red, one can see why the government has an interest in collecting the debt.

Personally, I don’t have any problem with this ruling. If you borrow money to go to school, you should pay it back. Failing to do so could deprive others of the same opportunity.
